about

Fourteen months after the release of their last record, Vienna Psychoanalytic Society return with Iconic Fiction, their fourth full-length album. Iconic Fiction is the first CD that the band recorded many of the songs together in the same studio, resulting in a more organic sound. It combines several electric and bass guitars merged with strong beats and layers of synthesizers. The lyrics explore several themes, including many songs that deal with true stories of both famous and lesser known women who face or faced adversity in their lives such as drug addiction, anorexia, depression and alienation. Some of them were able to overcome these issues, but most succumbed to them in one way or another. Societal root causes are explored. Iconic Fiction also examines the process of attempting to let go of parts of the past and of the “self” that can be destructive rather than constructive. The album title itself refers to escapism – we identify with iconic fictional characters because they take us to another place, away from the real world’s pain and struggles. With darker subject matter comes a sometimes darker sound, but the album is also characterized by the “pop music” feel of past VPS releases. The cover art is a depiction of DNA, which is literally what we are made of. The genetic strand is mysterious and music is the most intriguing and unique part of the puzzle. Iconic Fiction promises to be a vital chapter in the VPS musical journey.

Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (VPS) consists of Jeff Chard and Chad Kreutzweiser. Both Canadian born and raised in the Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge area. As teenagers growing up, going to different schools both Chard and Kreutzweiser didn't know each other but were both inspired by 80's, new wave, brit-pop music and took to the scene themselves, creating their own music throughout the late 80's and 90's in their own separate bands. In 2008, Kreutzweiser's cousin connected the two musicians and in 2009 they formed Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (VPS). Influenced and inspired by bands such as New Order and Depeche Mode, their music flowed easily with their common desire to blend keyboards and guitars. Iconic Fiction, their latest release continues with this lush formula.

Track Name: Welcome To My World
I don’t show, do you know, why this would be the case ?
You don’t go, when you’re low don’t feel like showing your face
You can row, in your boat, but if you can’t stay afloat
You’re in trouble
You’re in trouble

Pain, insomnia, depression, joy
Pain, insomnia, depression, joy

Welcome to my world

You can go, where you know, cause it’s too hard to stay
In that case, you can race all over the place
You can float, in your boat, but if you just can’t row
I’m in trouble
I’m in trouble
Track Name: Oberkirch
Get into the car
On a cold day in summer
Step over the bar
Into something you can’t leave behind
Strike a blow for the cause
For the world revolution
Step into the jaws
Of the beast that you’ve promised to slay

Sometimes I’m cold, sometimes I’m hot
Sometimes I’m in, and sometimes I’m not

Leave conventional life
Sacrificed on the altar of justice
Gave up mother and wife
There’s no turning back through the window
Strike a blow to the world
Take down the petit-bourgeoisie
Give up seeing your girls
All for the greater collective

Sometimes I’m up, sometimes I’m down
Sometimes I’m lost, and sometimes I’m found

Get out of the van
A martyr for peace but through violence
You could have just ran
For a life of both comfort and praise
Strike a blow for the left
Against the exploitive pigs
Watch every step
Because they won’t stop til they kill you

Sometimes I’m in, sometimes I’m out
Sometimes I’m sure, sometimes I doubt
Sometimes you live, sometimes you die
Sometimes you’re tough, and sometimes you cry

Oh, this lonely life
Inside my prison cell
Track Name: Detachment
I’ve been dreaming
That it was easy
And then I realized
It never was

When it’s time to reflect
No regrets, no regrets
When the situation calls for it I can be circumspect
When it’s time to inspect
Don’t deflect, that’s neglect
If the situation calls for it I’ve never been unchecked

It’s everyone’s fault but mine
I go there all of the time

I’ve got a feeling
I’ve been concealing
What I’ve been dealing
With all along

I’ve been thinking
If it was easy
I would expect things
To always please me

When it’s time to reflect
I fell like Bertolt Brecht
Disappointed in the choices people made I can detect
When it’s time to inspect
I have trekked – I feel wrecked
When the situation calls for it I’ve always been suspect

It’s nobody’s fault but mine
And the expectations of time

I’ve got a feeling
I need some healing
I need some kneeling
and I’ll be strong

I forgive you – you did your best
I forgive you – you’re better than the rest
Track Name: Dark Star
April
What can I say ?
When the sharp needle went into flesh I had to turn away

I never met you
And now you’re gone
But the things you taught those kids
they will live on

Oh April
You hurt my soul
When the syringe touched your skin I could see what it stole

I never talked to you
And now you’re dead
But the things you taught those kids remain
In their heads
Track Name: Unknown One
Egoism won’t ever fulfill you
Your selfishness will never instill in you
Qualities you need – to be happy

Fame and fortune won’t complete you
Selfless people will never compete with you
They know a better world – lies within

Unreal expectations set us up for a fall
Action not words means better place for us all
Track Name: Brief Incident
Nobody knows but I am falling, I am falling down
Everything goes reality irrelevant breakdown
When there’s no hope it’s desperation no way out, shutdown
Nobody knows but I am falling, I am falling down

I’m so very tired but I can’t sleep, I can’t sleep
I’m so very wired but I can’t see, I can’t see

Nobody knows but I am falling, I am falling down
Anything goes a flawed perception brings concealed breakdown
To feel no hope, to feel a failure, those who you letdown
Nobody knows but I am falling, I am falling down

I’m so very lost but I can’t be, I can’t be
I have to believe, it will be brief, will be brief
Track Name: Until Now
There is a place that you take me
It’s always shiny and new
If I’m in a state that could break me
You are what gets me through

Until now I’ve been alone here
Until now I’ve been confused

Until now I’ve been down low here
Until now I’ve been refused

There is a race that I’m running
Beside me I only see you
Somehow our bond just gets stronger
Because of the things we go through

Until now I’ve been alone here
Until now I’ve been confused
Until now I’ve been down low here
Until now I’ve been refused
Track Name: Will You Love Me Now ?
Times change, Things rearrange, Different page
Is it good enough for you ?

Not around, Different town, Did I let you down ?
Am I good enough for you ?

Thank you for all that you’ve done
It’s hard to be the only one

I’ve given you all I can
I’ve got to be my own man

Black holes, Reversed role, Takes a toll
Am I good enough to choose ?

Blurred lines, Strange times, Random rhymes
Am I good enough for you ?
Track Name: It's Not Your Fault
You’ve been held back
You’ve been hurt bad
You’ve been attacked
It’s not your fault

They all judge you
But what you’ve been through
Makes what you do
Logical

Don’t be ashamed
Don’t go astray
Find your own way
It’s not your fault

Those who judge you don’t know where you’ve been
Easy for them to look down and not in

You’ve been hurt bad
You’ve been held back
You’ve been bushwhacked
It’s not your fault

They might judge you
And all you’ve been through
They don’t know you
And never will

Those who judge you know not what they do
One day they might find themselves down there, too

Don’t go astray
Don’t be ashamed
Go your own way
It’s not your fault
